Wait for Windows 7 - preview shows good things.
No districts still running Windows 98 system
Most everyone running Windows XP system
Papillion LaVista running a lab of Vista and probably going to more labs with Vista.

Vista Notes:
Turn off urc on vista box makes it run much faster
Vista runs well but a lot of setup
2 gig ram recommended

What do you use for imaging computers:
Symantec Ghost - happy with—when imaging whole labs use gig switch
Have to built a multi card setup
Keep hardware the same to limit images
Use/push over network vs dvd installs
Altiris also used in some districts
Fewer issues navigate to dell/hp hardware

Good to manage from one site

Create a clean image upload for deployment
Frequency of re image-
  • When needed
  • Labs every year and when requested..
  • Push dat files (updates, virus, …)
  • Some nightly
  • Some monthly

Use Active Directory to push Flash, updates
Band width issues,
Some Wake on LAN
Depends on Routers issues

Many use Macffy, few symatic, client update,
We are proactive now, better handle on it


Move away from virus to malwear, spyware

If we can’t fix it in 30 minutes, reimage
Sync function for files saved at home via laptop re-sync back at school

Some put in place 25 mg for students 100mg for facstaff
  • Bennington provides a network share for students with a 50 meg quota. This quota is extended for certain students (Journalism, etc.)
